Grand Opening of New Dam

New Dam Grand Opening Ceremony

The Grand Opening Ceremony was held Friday, June 15th, 2012, on the east side of the dam. The dam cost approximately $9.5 million dollars and has a total generating capacity of 1.5 mega watts.  The new low flow continuous generation turbine is expected to produce 550kW of electricity and combined with the other existing turbines, is estimated to supply 12% of the city's annual energy needs.

The new East Powerhouse has a height of more than six stories from top to bottom.  While the old dam had eight gates, the new dam has wider spillway bays with six gates that measure fourteen by twenty-seven feet.  Building the new dam took almost seven years starting with a feasibility study in September 2006, to completion of construction in March 2012.  2,525 cubic yards of rock had to be excavated and 14 million pounds of steel reinforced concrete was poured to build the dam.
